dear yuletide author
Oct. 24th, 2020 07:30 pmsorry for the lateness of this. i have no excuse except for... everything happening right now.
first of all: thank you so much for writing for me!
you can find my tumblr here.
some general DNWs/prefs:
- i'm not into BDSM, and my tastes re sex generally run fairly vanilla. don't mind sex scenes in a fic but not looking for just porn.
- DNW fic featuring serious illness or major character death. especially no to cancer, even mentioned in passing.
- i don't like high school AUs or coffeeshop AUs.
- i don't like first person or second person (except for in epistolary fic).
- i don't like kidfic or pregnancy in fic.
- i would be thrilled with any kind of experimentation or weird formatting you want to try - from reverse chronology to epistolary fiction through to interactive fiction, etc.
- i also very happy without any of that stuff! whatever works for you is great.
- i like casefic, get-together fic, fic about characters getting back together (as friends or lovers), mysteries, 5+1 times stories, mutually unrequited pining, hurt/comfort (with the emphasis more on the hurt than the comfort), bittersweet stories, happy stories, sad stories (with at least a slightly hopeful ending).
- also a fan of canon-divergent AUs
College of Magics - Caroline Stevermer
Faris Nallaneen, Tyrian (College of Magics)
I love this book (and this series of books) with my whole heart. I love the quiet numinous quality of the magic, I love the ruritania, I love the school adventures and the mystery on the train, and I especially love the friendships and the romance between Faris and Tyrian.
I would love Faris/Tyrian shipfic. I would also be happy with gen (but not fic about them broken up). I love all the characters and would be happy to see anyone else turn up too, but Faris and Tyrian are the two I love most.
I'm sharing tweaked prompts from last year here, not because I haven't thought about it, but because these ideas live in my brain constantly.

Specific prompts:
- Would love a fix-it fic about Tyrian being stuck in the body of a 50-something king at the end of A College of Magics. Maybe there's a magical solution after all! Maybe they have to go on an adventure together to find it! Maybe it's a gross blood magic ritual and Faris is keen but Tyrian isn't! Who knows. I would love for them to find a way for Tyrian to be happy. Whether that means he gets his original body back somehow, or they de-age the body he's currently living in, or...
- If you don't want to focus on this, I would be happy with a story about events in the book from Tyrian's perspective. Would especially like his perspective on the relationship with Faris.
- Any kind of canon-typical adventures with the two of them would also be great. Maybe some more fun in Paris, or other cities in Europe? Maybe more shenanigans on a train?
- Epistolary fic between the two of them (and maybe other characters too) would be great.
- I love the worldbuilding of this universe a lot and would also like something about Faris and Tyrian visiting Glasscastle, or anything that ties into When The King Comes Home, whether that's in terms of art, magic/necromancy, or whatever.
Persuasion - Jane Austen
Frederick Wentworth (Persuasion - Austen), Anne Elliot (Persuasion - Austen)
This is my favourite Austen, and maybe my favourite romance ever. I love the yearning, and the fact that they come together stronger than ever before after a long separation. I love the letter, the complex web of social relations that they have to navigate, and the way that they really like each other - the way that you know they could just talk and talk, if circumstances were right.
Specific prompts:

So, mea culpa: i'm the worst because i somehow requested this fandom without the characters selected, which is really a cautionary tale about signing up for Yuletide while tired. I meant to choose Ned Mathey and Julian Lynes. If you didn't offer them, I'm sorry, and would be happy to receive a story you write about Cordelia!
I love these two books - I love the worldbuilding, the interplay between the historical setting and the magic system. The magic is fascinating, and I love the structure of the world that Ned works in. I also love mysteries, and casefic, and am particularly glad when my mysteries do not feature cop protagonists. I would be very happy to read fic that delves into their time at Oxford, or fic that explores their lives post-canon.
I am happy with any heat level for these two. Canon-typical fade to black is great if you go the romance fic route, or more explicit sex is good too.
Specific prompts:
I hope this is helpful and not too much or incomprehensible. Honestly as long as you don't hit my big DNWs, I'm easy to please, I'm just delighted you're writing for me. All three of these canons are very dear to my heart, and anything new will be so exciting. Happy Yuletide!

Specific prompts:
- I would love a good chewy modern day AU of this. There is never enough modern day Persuasion. Some AUs I'd love: grad school, academia, journalism, or other niche-y fields that you might know about and fancy writing about.
- Magical AU. Thinking of the fantasy-regency found in books like Sorcery and Cecilia and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, but really any kind of magical system would work well.
- What if Anne does become engaged to her cousin before they find out the truth about him, and before Wentworth gets the chance to propose? Maybe she was so despairing of Wentworth ever giving her another chance, maybe the timeline works out so that she accepts his proposal while she thinks he is going to marry Louisa... How do they fix this problem and still find each other again?
- If you'd rather write canon-compliant, I'd love to see some of the story told from Wentworth's perspective.
- Epistolary fic? More letters! Maybe some letters that the two characters send to their friends and relations during canon, showing us how they are/aren't talking about each other?
Lynes and Mathey Series - Amy Griswold & Melissa Scott
So, mea culpa: i'm the worst because i somehow requested this fandom without the characters selected, which is really a cautionary tale about signing up for Yuletide while tired. I meant to choose Ned Mathey and Julian Lynes. If you didn't offer them, I'm sorry, and would be happy to receive a story you write about Cordelia!

Specific prompts:
- Necromancy. Maybe Ned dies and Julian brings him back using some kind of weird magic that Ned would not approve of. Too bad that Ned can't argue with him about it! he's dead! Would want this to end happily.
- Casefic. Would love to see them solving a mystery, I can never get enough of it. Maybe they're dealing with a case that the police won't touch or don't care about? Maybe Cordelia has to step up and take on an investigative role?
- AU in a different historical time period. 1920s London? 1960s? 1980s? I don't really want modern day AU, but I consider any time through the 1990s to count as a "historical time period", and I am flexible. I would love to see what they, and the magical world they live in, would look like at another moment in history. But I want the world they live in to still be magical!
- OK I would also like modern day OR historical magical grad school/academia AU. I have grad school brainworms. Maybe this could also involve Ned and Julian as postgraduates solving a mystery? Maybe Cordelia is a student at magical Oxford in the 1920s?
- How did Ned and Julian start sleeping together again before Death by Silver? I would love to see their awkward misunderstandings and pining that still lead to fairly regular sex, and unspoken feelings...
- 5+1 fic about Ned and Julian at different times in their relationship? Showing a mixture of pining and very requited feelings? Yes yes yes.
- Epistolary fic. Maybe they're separated for case-related reasons, or maybe they write letters before they become friends/lovers again at the start of the series, and that's how we see them begin to reconnect romantically?
- Would also be happy with epistolary fic between other characters set in this universe. I bet Cordelia writes interesting letters both related to, and totally unrelated to their cases.
- Fic featuring flashbacks to Oxford, maybe a mystery involving Ned's Oxford friends (or Julian's) which churns up some memories of how they made each other thoroughly miserable when they were students... ending with them comforting/reassuring each other now?
- Undercover As A Couple/fake dating for the purposes of solving a mystery. Pre-canon or AU, maybe in another club like the Dionysus Club...?
- Maybe Ned and Cordelia have to go undercover as a couple and Julian has some feelings about it?
I hope this is helpful and not too much or incomprehensible. Honestly as long as you don't hit my big DNWs, I'm easy to please, I'm just delighted you're writing for me. All three of these canons are very dear to my heart, and anything new will be so exciting. Happy Yuletide!
